Red Hat and Axiom Space Partner to Launch On-Orbit Data Center

Red Hat

Collaboration to Enhance Space Cybersecurity, AI/ML, and Cloud Computing

Red Hat has announced a collaboration with Axiom Space to deploy the Data Center Unit-1 (AxDCU-1) in space. Targeted for launch in spring 2025 to the International Space Station (ISS), the prototype will test cloud computing, AI/ML applications, data fusion, and space cybersecurity.

“Off-planet data processing is the next frontier, and edge computing is a crucial component. With Red Hat Device Edge, mission partners will gain real-time decision-making capabilities in space with greater reliability and consistency.”

— Tony James, Chief Architect, Science and Space, Red Hat

The project will leverage Red Hat Device Edge, a lightweight Kubernetes-based solution that enables real-time processing in space. This technology reduces reliance on Earth-based data centers by processing data closer to its source, minimizing latency and security risks.

Transforming Space Computing and Cybersecurity

Axiom Space’s Orbital Data Centers (ODCs) aim to revolutionize in-space computing by providing secure and autonomous cloud storage and data processing capabilities. The goal is to enhance decision-making in space missions, improve cybersecurity, and support critical applications, including:

  • Earth observation satellite data processing
  • AI/ML training in orbit
  • Space weather analytics
  • Cyber intrusion detection and multi-factor authentication

“We are excited about the possibilities this collaboration with Red Hat enables for the future of space operations. Infusing terrestrial-grade cloud solutions into Orbital Data Centers will allow users to seamlessly transition workloads to orbit while leveraging lower latency and increased security.”

— Jason Aspiotis, Global Director of In-Space Data and Security, Axiom Space

Paving the Way for the Future of Space Operations

The launch of AxDCU-1 is a key milestone in Axiom Space’s vision to establish commercial space infrastructure. The company is currently developing Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station, to support long-term human presence and research in microgravity.

By integrating enterprise-grade cloud solutions into space, Red Hat and Axiom Space are unlocking new possibilities for industries that previously did not consider space an option.
