Indian has dropped down from the 35th rank in 2016 to the 44th rank in 2018 in the global ranking, Logistics Performance Index by World Bank. The Logistics Performance Index is an interactive benchmarking tool created to help countries identify the challenges and opportunities they face in their performance on trade logistics and what they can do to improve their performance. The LPI 2018 allows for comparisons across 160 countries.
In his presentation, Rao Poduri, CIO & CDO, Greaves Cotton, discusses the challenges that the Logistics industry in India is facing. “Infrastructure is not as developed in India. There are problems with the mode of transportation, some of them are government-owned and some of them are private. There are inefficient storage facilities, poor adoption and adaptation of technology. It is because of lack of awareness, unaffordability and sometimes because people are used to doing things the old way. Lack of skill and manpower is a result of inadequate training, improper leadership and support. In order for the logistics industry to grow, we need skilled personnel as warehouse managers and quality instruction supervisors. Some of these skills are being developed by companies investing in the right resources. But it is a long way to get there. There are also other challenges like regulatory hurdles (multiple regulatory agencies), obstacles in land acquisitions and lack of transparency in compliance. These are the challenges that people have to be aware of. It is not just about technology and technical solutions, it is also about understanding the underpinnings of the business,” he said.
